How to prepare for your first video session with a professional
A simple checklist for your first one-to-one video call with a coach, mentor or adviser: technology, setting and the questions to bring.
Talking to a coach, mentor or adviser by video call saves travel time and lets you choose the right person, wherever they are. A little preparation makes sure the time goes to your question, not to sorting out your microphone.
Check your technology the day before
- Use a recent browser on a laptop or computer if you can. A phone works too, but a bigger screen is easier when someone shows you a document.
- Test your webcam and microphone, and allow the browser to use them when it asks.
- Headphones with a microphone reduce echo and background noise.
- Make sure your internet connection is stable. If it is unreliable, sit closer to your router.
Choose a quiet, private spot
Many conversations are personal. Pick a room where you will not be interrupted and where others cannot overhear you. Sit with the light in front of you rather than behind you, so the other person can see your face.
Prepare your question
Write down in a few sentences what you want help with and what a good outcome would look like for you. Gather any documents or examples that are relevant, so you can describe or show them. If you have a deadline or a decision coming up, mention it at the start.
During the session
Take notes, or ask whether you can go over the next steps together at the end. Do not hesitate to say when something is unclear: a good professional would rather explain twice than have you leave with doubts.
After the session
Read your notes the same day and turn them into one or two concrete actions. If you want a follow-up, plan it while the conversation is still fresh.
