What is online mentoring, and when does it help?

Online mentoring explained: what it is, how it differs from coaching, and how to get the most out of a one-to-one video session.

A mentor is someone who has walked a road you are about to take, and is willing to share what they learned along the way. Online mentoring brings that conversation to your screen: you meet one to one by video call, from wherever you are, at a time that suits you both.

Because there is no travel involved, you are no longer limited to the people who happen to live nearby. You can look for the person whose experience fits your question best, in the language you are most comfortable with.

Mentoring, coaching or advice?

The words are often used side by side, but they point to slightly different things. A mentor shares their own experience and perspective. A coach helps you find your own answers through questions and structure. An adviser, such as an accountant or a lawyer, gives you expert guidance on a specific matter. Many good sessions mix all three, so what matters most is that you know what you want to walk away with.

When online mentoring helps

  • You are starting something new, such as a business, a study or a career step, and want to learn from someone who has done it.
  • You are stuck on a decision and want an outside view from someone with relevant experience.
  • You want regular check-ins to stay on track with a goal.
  • The right person for your question does not live near you.

How to get the most out of a session

Write down your question before the session, in one or two sentences. Share a little background in advance, so you do not spend half the time explaining. During the conversation, note concrete next steps. Afterwards, decide what you will try before a possible next session.

Be honest about what you expect. A mentor can share what worked for them and help you think, but the choices remain yours.

Finding the right mentor

Look for someone whose experience matches your situation, not only someone with an impressive title. Read their profile, check which languages they speak and what kind of sessions they offer. A short first session is often the easiest way to find out whether you click.

On creoviva you can search by what you need, country and language, and send a request for a one-to-one video session without creating an account. The professional accepts your request first, and you only pay once they have.
